We have great news to report from the home of the future Prairie Lane Elementary! Crews have been hard at work without disruption, as it is easier to maintain social distancing guidelines on most job sites.
The steel frame for most of the building is nearly complete, and the last portion of the building frame to be constructed is the new gym on the northeast side of the site. The masonry walls and steel roof should be completed in early June. Exterior wall framing and roofing work will begin in the coming weeks. Plumbing, HVAC and electrical rough-in work, along with concrete slab on grade, are the next activities inside the building footprint. Work to construct the area at Hascall St. will begin in late May and run through June.
Thank you all for your engagement and support as we continue our work on this exciting project!

Boys & Girls Club of the Midlands has operated a Club at Westside’s Westbrook Elementary since 2005, using existing school space to provide quality care to children ages 6 to 18. The new Club, connected to Westbrook, includes a state-of-the-art Innovation Center where members will be able to fly drones, code robots, and more.
“Our commitment to children doesn’t end at 3:30 when the final bell rings each day,” said Westside Superintendent Dr. Mike Lucas. “This beautiful new facility renews the incredible partnership Westside Community Schools has with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands and our community, to ensure our learners are nurtured and empowered both during and after school.”
“Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands is honored to continue our partnership with Westside Community Schools,” said Ivan Gilreath, President and CEO of Boys & Girls Club of the Midlands. “Our afterschool program at Westbrook Elementary will have a newly built facility that will be safe, fun and equipped with a state of the art Innovation Center that will have the latest and greatest technology, including a drone obstacle course. This Center will also be available to the school during school hours. Our partnership will provide opportunities to assist youth in being successful academically and socially.”
Speakers and special guests included Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts, Omaha City Councilman Brinker Harding, and Karen Hawkins, for which the Club is named after. Hundreds of students and families also attended to celebrate the new building and see everything it has to offer students.

Westside Community Schools leaders, educators, and neighbors gathered Monday, August 12 at 3:00pm for the official Ribbon Cutting & Open House at the newly constructed Swanson Elementary School. The facility at 86th & Harney has been built over the last 18 months, replacing the iconic Swanson School constructed in 1958.
The new Swanson Elementary is 54,000 square feet and cost an estimated $13.4 million. Westside voters approved construction as part of a 2015 bond issue, funding $79.9 million in facilities improvements throughout Westside Community Schools. The original Swanson Elementary was razed after the 2017-2018 school year to make way for a new building, which includes a separate cafeteria and gymnasium, dedicated elective classroom space, improved drop off and pick up access, upgraded security and entrance vestibules, improved ADA access, and the construction of a FEMA-rated storm shelter. The project was completed on time and on budget and will open to students August 14, on the first day of the 2019-2020 school year for Westside Community Schools.
“This state-of-the-art facility exemplifies why we are Westside Community Schools,” said Superintendent Dr. Mike Lucas. “We have a community of current and former parents, neighbors, and educators who unite together to ensure we are providing excellent, safe environments for future generations of learners. I can’t wait to see what our teachers and students achieve through this new school!”
