Schematic designs for the new Sunset Hills Elementary, presented to the Board of Education and the Bond Oversight Committee this week, lay out a one-story building with a number of elements that honor the school’s past and its unique features. The design includes outdoor courtyards and a layout that capitalizes on the school’s views of the surrounding creek and golf courses. A canopy at the front entrance would echo the building’s original design, glass block on the gym exterior would create a “twinkle” effect and the art room inside the front entry would play on the importance of art to the school community. Sunset Hills’ arched sign, made from structural material salvaged from the original building, would be relocated and get top billing near the school exit.
