April Construction Updates

SWANSON ELEMENTARY

Rough in and finish work continues at the new Swanson Elementary in both the classroom wing and in the administration area. Crews are currently installing millwork in the classrooms while painting, and door installation is progressing throughout the building. Gym equipment has now been installed, and crews are currently focusing on kitchen tile and equipment. Site work is also underway, and Vrana Construction is currently installing retaining walls along the north side of the building. We are still on time for a project opening to students in the Fall of 2019!

 

PRAIRIE LANE ELEMENTARY

Contract documents for the extensive renovation and additions at Prairie Lane are being finalized and sent to city officials for review. Vrana Construction has been selected as the CMR (Construction Manager at Risk), and construction is set to begin in June of 2019. All are invited to a Community Information session on April 2, 2019 at 6:30pm at Prairie Lane, to showcase design development drawings approved by the Westside Board of Education.

 

WESTSIDE HIGH SCHOOL

Crews used Spring Break to kick off construction on an expanded welding lab at Westside High School. The Westside High School Engineering Lab will allow more curriculum with state of the art equipment, making Westside a premiere program for workforce development and trades training. Our sincere thanks to the Westside Foundation and generous donors for funding this project, expected to be complete for the 2019-2020 school year!

 

WESTBROOK ELEMENTARY/WESTSIDE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB

Crews continue exterior brick work at the new Westside Boys & Girls Club at Westbrook Elementary, while interior metal framing and block work continues. Rough in work is also ongoing, as is roofing installation. Crews will install exterior window frames within a few weeks. Interior slab on grade work also continues This project, funded by the Boys & Girls Club of the Midlands, is scheduled to open to students in the Fall of 2019.

March 2019 Construction Updates

PRAIRIE LANE ELEMENTARY

Design work continues to progress at Prairie Lane! District leaders and Project Advocates are planning to present Design Development plans to the Board of Education for approval in March. A Request For Quotes for Contractors has also been issued and posted online (click here for more details); a bid will be selected in March. Construction on the extensive renovation and additions at Prairie Lane will begin June 1.

 

SWANSON ELEMENTARY

Crews are currently installing drywall in the classroom wing at the new Swanson! Metal stud framing is now happening all through the school. Crews continue to install mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins throughout, and exterior windows are now being installed. Crews have started installation of the underground piping for the storm system on th exterior of the building. They are also beginning work on the brick veneer on the south side of the building.

 

WESTBROOK/WESTSIDE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB

Work is progressing at Westbrook Elementary, the site of the Westside Boys & Girls Club! Crews are wrapping up steel roof installation on the learning center, and they continue work on masonry and the brick veneer. Temporary heating is being utilized to allow for the slab on grade installation in the lower level.

 

Board Approves Prairie Lane Concept Design

The Westside Board of Education has voted unanimously to approve a concept design for Prairie Lane Elementary School. As part of our 2015 Facilities Master Plan, Prairie Lane will undergo extensive renovations and expansion, with construction beginning the Summer of 2019.

TACKArchitects and Project Advocates facilitated the presentation, after gathering community input on wants and needs for the project. The Design Advisory Committee will continue to meet throughout this fall.
