Construction Update: September 2018

Prairie Lane Elementary

  • The Prairie Lane Design Advisory Committee met for the first time this week to begin discussions for the extensive remodel with additions planned for the school. They will work with TACKArchitects and Project Advocates on design concepts, meeting throughout the fall. The project is estimated to cost $10.8 million; work will begin in the summer of 2019.

Sunset Hills Elementary

Swanson Elementary

  • Work continues as crews build a brand new Swanson Elementary school! Footings in classroom areas are near completion. Steel will be installed soon. The new Swanson is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2019.

Westbrook Elementary

  • Construction of a new Westside Boys & Girls Club Honoring the Hawkins Family continues near Westbrook Elementary. Work on walls for the addition have begun, and crews are working their way around the perimeter. The East parking and drive thru lanes are now complete and functional; sod and landscaping will be added soon. This project, funded by the Boys & Girls Club of the Midlands, is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2019.

Westside High School

  • Students and staff started the school year with a beautiful new Little Theater space, thanks to the generosity and support of the Westside Foundation. The District is now accepted Statements of Qualifications for Construction Manager at Risk services to construct improvements to an expansion of the WHS Welding Lab/Engineering Tech space, a project funded by private donors and the Westside Foundation.

Westside Middle School

  • Work at Westside Middle School is also complete on time and on budget. Watch for an upcoming Open House sometime this fall!

Sunset Hills Opens to Students, Community

Sunset Hills Elementary School has opened for Westside Community Schools students. The $13.8 million dollar project is on time and on budget as promised to voters in 2015.

District leaders hosted students, staff and community members August 8th for a ribbon cutting ceremony. The event concluded two years of planning, design and construction as part of Westside’s 2015 Master Facilities Plan. The original Sunset Hills Elementary School, built in 1956, was demolished this summer; the new Sunset Hills was built just to the west of the original school at 95th and Walnut Street.

The new building is a 2-section elementary school, approximately double the size of the previous building. It opened for the first day of classes on Tuesday, August 14th.

Construction Updates: Summer 2018

A brand new Sunset Hills Elementary School is ready for students and staff to begin the 2018-2019 school year! Crews are installing final site amenities including parking, sidewalk details and landscaping. Our community is invited to a public Open House on Wednesday August 8 from 6:00-8:00pm!

Crews have made extensive progress at Swanson Elementary over the summer! Gym walls are now complete, and steel erection for the building will soon begin. Swanson students and staff will learn and work at the Swing School through the 2018-2019 school year; the brand new Swanson Elementary is set to open in the Fall of 2019.

Crews are currently working to install new parking on the east side of Westbrook Elementary. Also in progress: the foundations for the new Westside Boys and Girls Club! This project is paid for by the Boys & Girls Club of the Midlands and not part of the 2015 Major Facilities Plan.

Crews conducted exploratory work at Prairie Lane Elementary over the summer. Design research and planning for extensive remodel and additions at Prairie Lane will begin this fall.

Renovation work at Westside Middle School is complete!

WHS Theater

Thanks to the support of our generous donors, the Little Theater at Westside High School underwent a complete renovation over the summer! The new flexible learning space has soundproof walls, new flooring, and state-of-the-art technology for classroom use, team activities and community events. Designs are now being finalized for expansion of the Westside Welding Lab (made possible thanks to the Westside Foundation!); work should begin this fall. Finally, the summer roof project is expected to be complete before students begin classes August 14-15.


Construction Updates: May 2018

May 14, the Board of Education approved TACKArchitects as the architectural firm to design the extensive remodel with additions planned for Prairie Lane Elementary. TACK, Project Advocates and district leaders also met with Prairie Lane staff this month to gather feedback on the current building and what they would like in the future. Design Advisory Committee members have been invited to participate in planning; preliminary meetings will begin this summer and collaboration will begin in the fall. May 14-15, staff members moved what they could into the new Sunset Hills Elementary. Once the school year concludes, staff will move in the remainder of their belongings on May 29. Crews are currently putting in new sidewalks around the Sunset Hills pool, which will be ready for the public on May 26. We will host a Ribbon Cutting and Open House at the new Sunset Hills Elementary on Wednesday August 8th! The event will be open to the public to view this beautiful new school before students and families attend the Sunset Hills Sneak-A-Peek and Back To School Picnic on August 9th, and start class on August 14th. The project is on time and on budget.

The Design Advisory Committee met with Alley Poyner Macchietto architects, Project Advocates and district leaders earlier this month for an updated presentation about the new Swanson Elementary! CLICK HERE for new images and details!

Swanson Construction

Mass grading at the site continues, and crews have started footings and foundations. The new school is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2019.

Westbrook staff and students, District leaders, Boys & Girls Club of the Midlands and several other community partners celebrated the official groundbreaking of the new Westside Boys & Girls Club Honoring the Hawkins Family on May 8th. Construction of the new facility will begin May 29th, a project funded by the Boys & Girls Club of the Midlands. The club is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2019.

Construction crews will restart work as soon as the school year concludes, finishing all renovations this summer.

Work will soon be underway to expand the Welding Lab/Engineering Tech Space at Westside High School, as well as the Little Theater! Construction is expected to begin this summer, made possible thanks to the generosity and support of the Westside Foundation!

Alumni, Community say goodbye to Sunset Hills

March 31, dozens of former Sunset Hills students and staff members say goodbye to the longtime staple of Westside Community Schools. Sunset Hills Elementary, built in 1956, will close this May. A brand new Sunset Hills Elementary School is being built next door.

Westside hosted a One Last Look event open house for all former Sunset Hills students, staff, families and community members to tour the building one final time.
